Genesis and the Age of the Earth #15
Genesis and the Age of the Earth — a major internal Christian debate frequently raised by skeptics.
Skeptics frequently point to the age of the earth as a place where the Bible and science plainly disagree: Genesis describes creation across six days, while mainstream geology and cosmology date the earth at roughly 4.5 billion years old and the universe at roughly 13.8 billion. What’s less often acknowledged outside the church is that this is not primarily a fight between “the Bible” and “science” but a live, respectful disagreement among Bible-believing Christians over how Genesis 1 should be read.
The Argument
Young-earth creationists read the “days” of Genesis 1 as ordinary 24-hour days in a straightforward sequence, generally placing creation a few thousand to about ten thousand years ago, often using biblical genealogies as a rough chronological framework, and hold that a plain reading of the text is the most faithful approach regardless of the tension it creates with mainstream science. Old-earth creationists (including day-age and gap theory positions) argue the Hebrew word for “day” (yom) can denote a long, indefinite period elsewhere in Scripture, and point to texts like 2 Peter 3:8 (“with the Lord one day is as a thousand years”) as evidence that Scripture itself doesn’t demand a rigid literal reading of time in this context, allowing the days of creation to correspond to vast ages. Framework and literary readings go further still, treating the six-day structure as a theological, poetic ordering device — a temple-building or workweek pattern — rather than a claim about chronological sequence at all, pointing to features like the sun being created on “day four” after “day and night” already existed on day one (Genesis 1:1-5, 14-19) as evidence the text isn’t operating as a scientific timeline.
Common Objections
Each position faces real pushback, and it’s worth naming honestly: young-earth readings face the weight of overwhelming and independently converging scientific dating methods (radiometric dating, light travel time from distant stars, ice cores, tree rings); old-earth and framework readings face the charge that they’re reading modern scientific conclusions back into an ancient text rather than letting it speak on its own terms. Sincere, scripturally serious Christians land in each camp, and this remains one of the areas where the church has not reached consensus.
