Psalms 123 DBY
Summary: A short Song of Ascents built on a single sustained image of dependence: "Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God" (v. 2). The psalmist lifts his eyes to God "that dwellest in the heavens" (v. 1), pleading for mercy amid being "exceedingly filled with contempt" from the proud and scornful (v. 3-4), a brief but vivid picture of quiet, attentive waiting under social humiliation.
1A Song of degrees. Unto thee do I lift up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
2Behold, as the eyes of servants [look] unto the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress, so our eyes [are directed] to Jehovah ourGod, until he be gracious unto us.
3Be gracious unto us, O Jehovah, be gracious unto us; for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
4Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.
