Psalms 23 DBY

Summary: Perhaps the most beloved psalm, Psalm 23 casts God as a shepherd who leads the psalmist "beside still waters" and restores his soul (v. 2-3), then shifts the image to a host who prepares a table and anoints his head even "in the presence of my enemies" (v. 5). Its central line of trust, "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" (v. 4), has made it a standard text at funerals across traditions. It closes with quiet confidence: "I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever" (v. 6).

1A Psalm of David. Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside still waters.

3He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6Surely, goodness and loving-kindness shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for the length of the days.
