Psalms 46 DBY
Summary: A hymn of confident trust amid cosmic upheaval, Psalm 46 declares "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" even should mountains be "moved into the heart of the sea" (v. 1-2), contrasting roaring waters and nations in uproar with a river that gladdens the city of God. Its most famous line, spoken as God's own command amid the chaos, is "Be still, and know that I am God" (v. 10), a verse that inspired Martin Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." It closes with the refrain "the LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress" (v. 11).

2Therefore will we not fear though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the heart of the seas;
3Though the waters thereof roar [and] foam, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4There is a river the streams whereof make glad the city ofGod, the sanctuary of the habitations of the Most High.
5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:God shall help her at the dawn of the morning.
6The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7Jehovah of hosts is with us; theGod of Jacob is our high fortress. Selah.
8Come, behold the works of Jehovah, what desolations he hath made in the earth:
9He hath made wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariots in the fire.
10Be still, and know that I amGod: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
