Zoe #37

ζωή(zoe)GreeknounStrong's G2222

Zoe — the Greek word for life, used in the New Testament for ordinary living existence and above all for the eternal, God-given life that Jesus offers.

Zoe is the Greek word for life in the sense of being alive. It is used of the life of plants, animals, and human beings, and it becomes the New Testament’s central word for the life that comes from God. Greek had other words for related ideas: psyche, which can mean a person’s life or soul, and bios, which more often means the course or means of living.

Biblical Usage

The word is especially prominent in John’s Gospel and First John. The prologue says that “in him was life,” and that this life was the light of men (John 1:4), and Jesus says that he came so that his sheep may have life and have it “more abundantly” (John 10:10). John 3:16 pairs it with the promise of everlasting life for those who believe. In John 17:3 Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, so the word describes a relationship as much as a duration. The First Epistle of John states that God has given eternal life, that this life is in his Son, and that whoever does not have the Son does not have the life (1 John 5:11-12).

Theological Significance

Interpreters often say zoe means spiritual or divine life in contrast to bios, meaning mere biological existence, but the distinction is not absolute. The word is also used of physical life, and bios itself can carry a moral tone, as in the “pride of life” that is not from the Father (1 John 2:16), so context has to decide. The phrase “eternal life” (zoe aionios) is likewise read in two ways, as life that lasts forever and as life of a different quality that begins now. Most traditions hold both, treating eternal life as something believers already share in and as something completed at the resurrection. Jesus’s claim to be the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), made to Martha before the raising of Lazarus, is the Gospel’s clearest statement of the link.
