Psalms 54 WBT

Summary: Headed with the occasion "when the Ziphites went and told Saul, 'Is not David hiding among us?'" (1 Samuel 23 and 26), Psalm 54 is a short, urgent plea from a man betrayed by fellow Israelites who tipped off Saul to his hiding place. The psalmist appeals directly to God's name and might for vindication against these "strangers" and "ruthless men" who do not set God before themselves (v. 1, 3). It closes with a vow to offer a freewill sacrifice and a confident anticipation of looking in triumph on his enemies (v. 6-7).

1To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us? Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.

2Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

3For strangers have risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.

4Behold, God [is] my helper: the Lord [is] with them that uphold my soul.

5He will reward evil to my enemies; cut them off in thy truth.

6I will freely sacrifice to thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for [it is] good.

7For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and my eye hath seen [its desire] upon my enemies.
